Worship is man’s appropriate response to the presence of God and true Christian worship is responding to God as He reveals Himself and manifests His presence in Jesus Christ. Our foremost desire is to worship God with words and deeds that are worthy of Him.
God is present everywhere and at all times (Psalm 139:7-12; Psalm 90:1-2) and He continually reveals Himself through the wonders of creation (Psalm 19:1-6; Romans 1:20) and through our inner being (Romans 1:19, 2:14-15). Therefore, we can and should worship Him everywhere and at all times. Nevertheless, God also is present and reveals Himself in special ways. His ultimate and final self-revelation is His Son, Jesus Christ, who is Immanuel, “God with us” (John 1:1,14; Hebrews 1:2-3). God is present and speaks to us through His Word, the Bible (2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:16-21). We experience God’s presence in a special way when we gather together in Jesus’ name (Matthew 18:20) and when we celebrate the Lord’s Supper (Matthew 26:26-29). Therefore, we place emphasis on corporate worship. When we gather on Sunday morning and on other occasions, we have the opportunity to experience and respond to God’s presence and listen to His voice as His Word is taught. We respond to God’s holiness and power with reverent fear. We respond to His love, grace and mercy with joyful thanksgiving and faith. We aspire to “love God with all our heart, and with all our soul and with all our mind” (Matthew 22:37; Luke 10:27). We express our love for God generally through obedience to His commands, including “loving our neighbors as ourselves” (Matthew 22:39). In corporate worship we express our love especially in prayer (Matthew 6:5-15), giving (Matthew 2:11), singing (Colossians 3:16) and attending to His Word as it is proclaimed (1 Peter 2:1-2).
